The Cannabis sativa plant produces over 400 chemicals, but only THC can make you fly. At least that’s what we must know so far. On December 30, a team of researchers from Italy announced that they had found two new cannabinoids or active ingredients in marijuana such as THC and CBD in cbd oil. The first is tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THCP). Scientists suspect this cannabinoid is 30 times stronger than THC. However, it is not clear what the 30 times stronger means. When tested on mice, THCP was shown to be more active than THC at lower doses. Apart from THCP, they also found cannabidiphorol (CBDP) which is still a group with the popular additive CBD.
Published in Scientific Reports, the THCP findings could explain some of the variability that makes a person high — why a cannabis mixture can evoke different feelings. Besides, it also explains some aspects of THC treatment, which can cure nausea and restore appetite in people with cancer and HIV. Marijuana is like a factory that produces hundreds of chemicals, 60 of which are cannabinoids. These properties can mimic chemicals the body produces naturally to balance inflammation. Few of the cannabinoids have received much attention, despite their many promising medical uses.
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), for example, can control obesity by its ability to moderate glucose levels. However, that does not mean that daily shopping can prevent diabetes. The reason is that the THCV concentration in most cannabis strains is very small. The levels of the two new cannabinoids are also low. Researchers analyzed varieties of low THC or FM2 cannabis, which are grown by members of the Italian military. THCP and CBDP may be a lot more than others, but we need research to prove it. It won’t be difficult to breed the cannabis plant specifically to produce high numbers of new cannabinoids.
Some startups have even started growing it in yeast. At this time, the benefits of these two cannabinoids are unknown. CBDP and THCP may work better in treating certain conditions. Or perhaps this active ingredient has completely new or no medical uses. We only found out after conducting clinical trials. That means it will take several more years to find out what it is used for.
