MTB Olympic Course Information:
Swim 1.5 km
The glassy waters of Black Butte Lake provide the backdrop for the swim course, which will start at the main dock area, where swimmers will head out to the first swim buoy continuing clockwise, keeping the highly visible buoys to their right. Ending at the dock there, will be a quick jog to T1. Lifeguards will provide water safety along the swim course. The water temperature historically is around the mid to low 60′s. Though with the El Nino in full swing the temperatures can swing in either direction. Wetsuits are highly recommended unless you are a polar bear.
MTB Bike Course 18 miles
Following the transition onto the bike, racers will follow trek up the shore line of Black Butte Lake past the campgrounds. Passing along the park entrance road they will start to hammer the lake rollers into the old motocross park. The only engine that will be helping you out here is your legs so remember to pace yourself! Following the perimeter of the lake around mile 6 you will start to head inland where you will be prepping for the big climb of the big Black Butte itself. This is a lava rock formation so remember to have your wits and keep the bike upright! There is a lot of loose terrain and if you go down you will be remembering it for a while. The decent of Black Butte is a tricky S-Turn that will put you on the backside towards the dam. From there you will be shooting down a technical ravine where you will continue your journey through the sprawling rollers on your way back to transition. Remember there are more challenging rollers on the way home so make sure to save those legs for the run!
